story_struggle

In 2000, Ben and Dan started a web design agency called the Rocket Science Group. They hated designing email newsletters for their clients because the code was clunky, tedious, and constantly broke across different email clients. The agency was struggling to survive the dot-com crash, and they were taking any freelance job they could get just to keep the lights on and pay their rent. They had no investors, no grand vision, and zero funding.

story_breakthrough

Ben repurposed some old code he had written for a digital greeting card project to create a simple, streamlined email tool. They gave it away to their agency clients. Slowly, the email tool grew entirely by word-of-mouth because it was the only platform that didn't feel "corporate." In 2007, realizing the tool was vastly more profitable and scalable than their consulting work, they made the terrifying decision to shut down the agency and go all-in on Mailchimp. They introduced a freemium model in 2009, which exploded their user base and eventually led to a massive $12 billion acquisition by Intuit.
